Did you know Saint Lucia is the only country in the world named after a woman? It’s fitting since she’s stunning, magical, and leaves you longing to return. From lush rainforests and dramatic volcanic peaks to turquoise bays and warm-hearted locals, Saint Lucia is a sensory masterpiece.
First Impressions: A Dream Realized
Saint Lucia had been on my bucket list for as long as I can remember. I was excited to finally see the Pitons up close. Those dramatic volcanic peaks that define St. Lucia’s coastline. They’re even more striking in person, rising straight from the sea and anchoring the whole view. But the island offers so much more: cascading waterfalls, a town built inside a volcanic crater (Soufrière, named after the sulfur scent that lingers in the air), the world’s only drive-through volcano, and beaches so beautiful they feel unreal.
Where We Stayed: Secrets Saint Lucia
We stayed at the newly opened Secrets Saint Lucia, an adults-only, all-inclusive resort nestled in Choc Bay. Though it had only been open for about three months, and the food service was still finding its rhythm, the resort itself was gorgeous. Imagine golden sand, swaying palms, and two pools, one for quiet relaxation, the other for lively entertainment.
Dining highlights:
- Portofino: Elegant Italian fare in a romantic setting
- Morgan’s Pier: Fresh seafood with unbeatable sunset views
Arrival in Style: Private Transfer Perks
Saint Lucia offers multiple transfer options from helicopter, boat, or car. We chose a luxury private car service, and I’d do it again in a heartbeat. Our driver, Whitney, greeted us with champagne, Piton beer, and snacks, and shared island insights as we wound through lush hills and coastal curves. Despite the island’s reputation for twisty roads, our ride was smooth and scenic.
Tip: Ask your driver to stop for photos along the way. The views are postcard-perfect.
The Ultimate Day: Private Boat + Soufrière Tour
Because we had just four nights on the island, we wanted to see it all, so we booked a private boat tour paired with a private driver. This was hands-down the best decision of the trip.
Boat highlights:
- Marigot Bay: A serene inlet lined with yachts and palms
- Bat Cave & Lovers’ Arch: Film-worthy scenery (yes, Pirates of the Caribbean was filmed here!)
- The Pitons: Turning the corner and seeing them rise before us was unforgettable
Once in Soufrière, our driver met us and the adventure continued. We soaked in Piton Falls and Toraille Waterfall, and wandered through lush gardens to the Diamond Waterfall, shimmering with mineral hues.
Mud Baths & Volcano Magic
Standing on the edge of a bubbling crater, surrounded by steam and sulfur, was surreal. We slathered ourselves in mineral-rich volcanic mud and soaked in the hot springs. Locals say it makes you look ten years younger. Who am I to argue?
Lunch with a View: Seashell Beach Restaurant
We stopped for lunch at Seashell Beach Restaurant, a hidden gem with panoramic views of the Pitons. A local buffet, fresh juices, and the company of our driver-turned-friend made it my favorite meal of the trip.
Sugar Beach & Sunset Return
Before heading back, we spent time at Sugar Beach, nestled between the Pitons. The water was crystal clear, perfect for snorkeling and soaking in the moment. As we cruised back toward the resort, the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in gold and lavender.
🌅 This day was pure magic. If you do one thing in Saint Lucia, make it this.
Reduit Beach: A Local Vibe
The next day, we ventured north to Reduit Beach, a lively stretch with vibrant blue water and views of Pigeon Island. We rented chairs and an umbrella for about $20 and settled in. Vendors can be persistent, but a firm “no thank you” works wonders.
Lunch at Spinnakers Beach Bar & Grill was a highlight. I had the chicken roti, a warm, curry-filled wrap that was hands-down my favorite bite of the trip.
Final Thoughts: Saint Lucia, You Have My Heart
Saint Lucia didn’t just meet my expectations, it exceeded them. The landscapes, the people, the flavors, the freedom to explore, it all felt like a dream. I’m already planning to return with my kids and experience it all over again.
